An introduction

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a natural, deeply relaxed state of focused attention, a little like being absorbed in a good book, or that deeply relaxed state you reach just before you fall asleep. Being this relaxed allows you to access your subconscious, the place where the thoughts and memories we don't access day to day are stored, and to make positive changes that benefit you. You stay aware and in control the whole time.

In this calm state the busy, critical part of the mind quietens, making it easier to take on new ways of thinking, feeling and responding. Hypnotherapy uses that state, combined with psychotherapy techniques and practical tools, to help you make the changes you want.

How it can help

  • Calms the body and mind, lowering stress and the feeling of always being on edge.
  • Changes unhelpful patterns, from habits and cravings to the way you react under pressure.
  • Builds confidence and motivation by rehearsing success and strengthening a more positive outlook.
  • Gives you tools to keep: self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques you can use long after our sessions end.

About me

Hi, I'm Ioanna, Dip Hyp CS

I'm a qualified hypnotherapist counsellor, trained with Chrysalis. I've undertaken extensive practical training and supervision, along with both written and practical assessments, all to help hone my hypnotherapy skills.

Over the last year I've had great success helping people, and I've witnessed first-hand just how powerful hypnotherapy can be.

I'm a firm believer in the client-centred approach. I'm not here to fix anything, but rather to guide and facilitate you in making the changes you need.

I have a special interest in cultural and childhood trauma, areas I can fully empathise with.

And please don't panic when you hear the word hypnotherapy. I'm not going to make you cluck like a chicken when you hear a certain sound! You remain fully aware and in control the whole time. So let me support you.

How it works

From your first conversation to lasting change

Hypnotherapy works best when it's focused on something specific. Start by finding the area you'd like help with, then choose whether you'd prefer one-to-one sessions tailored entirely to you, or a small, affordable group focused on one theme. There's no pressure and no commitment until you're sure it feels right.

Common questions

Will I lose control or be made to do anything?

No. You stay aware and in control throughout, and you can open your eyes and stop at any time. Hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis.

Does it work online?

Yes. Many people find it easier to relax in their own space. You'll just need a quiet room, a comfortable chair and headphones.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you'd like to change. Some habits take one to two sessions; anxiety work is usually four to six. We'll agree a plan at your consultation.

Is everything confidential?

Yes, within the code of ethics of my registered body, the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). I'll explain the few legal exceptions at our first meeting.
